— The colorful sculpture towering above Poynter Park has a certain grace to it, though it’s meant to depict something menacing.

Artists and University of South Florida marine scientists unveiled the 30-by-40-foot sculpture Wednesday and hope its vortex shape and recycled plastic paneling send a message about litter.

“We’re studying the effects of this trash on marine creatures, and so what we wanted was to really have a way to bring the problem to people, to have them understand,” said Frank Muller-Karger, a professor at USF’s College of Marine Science.
