These protrusions help the turtle swallow their food, it also keeps the food from coming back out, which is why it’s so important to recycle plastic bags. Plastic bags floating in the water look a lot like jellyfish to sea turtles, and once they start eating it, it gets hooked and they are forced to swallow them.
Please do your part and recycle your plastic bags. Most groceries stores have recycle bins by the entrance.
