Reef Relief leads Marine Debris Cleanups throughout the Florida Keys. We have proudly partnered with many individuals, non-profits, governmental organizations, school groups, clubs, and more to keep our shorelines and communities debris free. Through these partnerships, we are able to access critical habitat, boat-based transportation, kayak donations, etc. maximizing our impact. Permitted through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Reef Relief works with volunteers and other organizations to remove ghost fishing gear from sensitive environmental areas. Waste Management continues to be a huge supporter in this initiative, frequently picking up trash after the event for free. Since 2010, we have cleaned up over 500,000lbs of trash! 13 volunteers, one beautiful day on the water, and a whole lot of impact 🌿🚣♀️ We paddled out into the Coupon Bight Aquatic Preserve to tackle marine debris head-on: untangling trap rope from mangrove roots, hauling out a discarded fridge, and even recovering an abandoned kayak and other debris for a total collection weight of 291lbs.
Huge thanks to SeaCamp for providing a launch site, Big Pine Kayak Adventures for donating kayaks, and Florida Department of Environmental Protection for their support. This effort was part of the I.CARE Trash Derby. Every pound removed helps protect this incredible ecosystem. Activities occurred within the FKNMS under FKNMS permit and with FWC authorization.
We had a wonderfully successful Earth Day event this year with our partners KEEN and the City of Key West! Nearly 200 volunteers collected 3,763 lbs of trash and 7 gallons of cigarette butts!
We want to give a special shout out to the volunteers who stenciled 343 storm drains across the city!
Strong partnerships, real impact 🌊 Navy FRCSE Detachment, Florida Wildlife Commission, and Reef Relief teamed up to tackle a remote stretch of coastline in the Lower Keys and the results speak volumes. In just under two hours, the team removed 660 pounds of marine debris from this critical, protected habitat. 💪🌱 Every pound collected helps preserve the health of our oceans and the life that depends on them.
