The City of Key West has hundreds of storm drains that are meant to keep our streets flood free in the event of rain. These drains direct stormwater runoff through 63 outfalls with minimal filtration to the ocean. This means that the water running off buildings, cars, lawns, and streets, gathering all sorts of pollutants (including debris and chemicals) is washed down these drains and is led straight into our waters. As part of our Stormwater Education Project, Reef Relief leads Storm Drain Stenciling events in which we work with volunteers to add this messaging to the drains to encourage the public to be more conscious about what they do with their waste, combating pollution and keeping our oceans clean. Since 2010, we have stenciled and maintained signage for over 8,000 storm drains. Thank you to our volunteers past and future!
