Mark Songer experienced the beauty and diversity of near shore coral reefs on a glass bottom boat tour when he and his wife Lois visited Key West for the first time on their wedding trip in 1987. Almost immediately they began scheming to find a way to permanently relocate to fully enjoy the natural wonders of Monroe County’s island paradise.
Following Mark’s career as a CPA and financial executive, the couple arrived in Key West in 2004 and never looked back. Since then Mark has specialized his professional skills to focus on the not-for-profit sector. He currently splits time as accountant for the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, Inc. and working with his wife at their small retail business Impossible Things Bead Emporium & Studio.
As a volunteer and board leader for Last Stand, Mark is a frequent speaker at Key West City Commission meetings where he represents the organization in advising on policies and actions to improve the quality of life and the environment of the Florida Keys. Mark also represents Last Stand at meetings of the Everglades Coalition, a group of 61 not-for-profit organizations (including Reef Relief) that advocates for restoration of the Everglades that will also benefit water quality in the Florida Bay and beyond. He is pleased to join Reef Relief board to help leverage the good work that several nonprofit organizations perform to protect the environment and enrich our lives.
