Jamaica

The reefs of Jamaica are in poor shape due to over-fishing, fishing with explosives, coral harvesting, development, untreated sewage, and other human-caused problems. It is believed that the deterioration of the reefs is causing Jamaica's beaches, a precious tourism resource, to erode. Montego Bay Marine Park is considered severely threatened due to lack of management. Oil and other pollutants from the airport add to the damage caused by fish traps, spearfishing and collection of coral by tourists. The park is badly in need of management to save the remaining reef in this area.
