Cayo Carnival Fundraiser Sucessful!

C ayo Coordinator George Murphy was delighted,"What a great town! So many people stepping forward without hesitation to help a great cause and a great party." Saturday, November 20, local children turned out in force at the Kid's Korner at Cayo Carnival, the annual fundraising party for Reef Relief. As the evening approached, they were followed by literally thousands of partygoers who ventured out to the open air garden at East Martello in Key West to dance to Caribbean music, eat gourmet food donated by over 35 key West restaurants, and hope to win one of over a hundred raffle prizes, all valued at over one hundred dollars.

The grand winner of the 7 day cruise for two aboard the Holland America Cruise Line, compliments of the Florida Caribbean Cruise Lines, was Jane White of Cudjoe Key. About four thousand people attended the thirteenth annual Cayo Carnival. Major sponsor First State Bank set up an ATM that was used all night long and Moola the Manatee helped out at Kid's Korner. Green Turtle Cay Buoy Chart

D uring the summer of ‘99, Reef Relief, in cooperation with the Green Turtle Cay Foundation, Edith & Curtis Munson Foundation, Linton's Cottages–owned by Dr. & Mrs. Brian Lapointe, Cape Air, and residents of the island, joined forces to begin a coral reef conservation program for the island of Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos, Bahamas. Eliminating anchor damage through the installation of reef mooring buoys was a top priority. Ten buoys were installed at frequently-used coral reefs of Green Turtle Cay with plans for additional buoys in the future.

Reef Relief has produced an informational chart to help boaters of Green Turtle Cay locate the reef mooring buoys. Each of 12 reefs with buoys are described and identified on a chart. The flyer also provides basic steps for how to use reef mooring buoys and other tips for reef-friendly activities. The chart is available on the Reef Relief website in Adobe Acrobat format with the print layout intact. You will need a copy of Adobe's free Acrobat reader in order to view the newsletter. Click here to download the Green Turtle Key, Abacos Bahamas reef mooring buoy informational chart and/or the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Hard copies are available on Green Turtle Cay or through Reef Relief. Come by the Environmental Center and Store at 201 William St., Key West, FL 33041, call our office (305) 294-3100, or email us at:
