The Great White Heron
Largest of all American Herons, the White Heron is indigenous to the shallow bays and mangrove islands of the Florida Keys. Their numbers suffered a severe decline by the 1930's because of the Great Hurricane of 1935 and extensive hunting. They were killed for their beautiful plumage, which was used to adorn women's hats.
