The Coral Nursery Project is one of the most successful marine programs that Reef Relief has been involved in. The potential that this project has to offer goes far beyond the stabilized pieces of storm damaged coral rescued from the reef.

The Coral Nursery Program stabilized broken pieces of Elkhorn coral that....

...helped with the continuation of the species.

...helped increase the habitat for fish and other reef creatures.

...initiated a reef survey that
included the nursery and the surrounding area.
would become a routine part of Reef Relief’s Photomonitoring schedule.

...initiated an educational program that
involved the community through hands on participation.
     involved class room participation.

...increased awareness
     through newspaper and TV media.
through word of mouth, referred to locally as ‘the coconut telegraph’.

...increased hopes in the community
that positive actions can be taken to save coral.
that ‘average’ citizens can participate to improve conditions at the reef.

One of the benefits of the monitoring program is that it allows us to return to the same Elkhorn coral formation repeatedly making it easier to follow specific growth rates and the spread of disease outbreaks.
